ASVAB Requirements – What You Need To Know
When you are considered a career in the military you need to take the ASVAB test. But each branch of the military has different ASVAB requirements that you need to meet. They are different levels of education that you must reach to take the test. But you also need to score a certain amount of points on that ASVAB test to gain access into the branch you desire.
For the Air Force you will pretty much be looking at having at least a high school diploma. They do not accept that many people who have received a GED. But if you have scored at least a 65 on that ASVAB and have a GED you may be able to get into this branch. But with a high school diploma the minimum score you can have is 36 points.
However, the Army has let in the most of any service for those people who do not have a diploma but only that GED. That does not mean you will skip the ASVAB test though you do need to score at least a 31. Though they have also let in many people who have scored a bit lower on the test and meet their needs. Another choice you have with the Army is the Prep school that will allow many people to join this branch who do not have a diploma or even a GED.
While you may feel that the Marines are the right choice for you. As long as you have a 32 on your ASVAB and your high school diploma you may well be on your way. Very few cases have seen people scoring around a 25 or higher and getting into this branch. It is around 5 percent of people who have that GED that can get into the Marines.
But you will need to score higher on the GED, looking at scoring a 50 as a minimum with a GED to get into this branch. The Navy has set up their requirements for people with GEDs the same with a score of 50 you may get into this branch. But you also need to meet a few other requirements along with this, three reference letters from influential people. Also no past involvement with drugs or the police and you may get into the Navy with only a GED.
Minimum scores that you need for a high school diploma to join up with Navy are a 35. Again they have let in a few people who scored lower at some points.
Finally, you may consider the Coast Guard as your choice of service. But you need to have that high school diploma and a test score of 40 on the ASVAB. A few cases have come up where they have given waivers to people to join up with a lower score.
Yes you can again possibly join the Coast Guard with only a GED, but you will need to score another 10 points minimum on that ASVAB too.
