Perseverance In The Face Of Job Adversity
Check out any of the job boards or online recruitment agencies and you will see that things have changed in the job world in the last year or two. There are now far fewer jobs being advertised as there are of course fewer jobs to be found. Companies are also under pressure to cut costs so they are finding cheaper and smarter ways of advertising their available positions
So- what does the fact that there are less jobs available mean to me? For a start- it means that you need to be better than ever before. People, particularly recruiters are in a buyers market. They can get some great people to work for them at bargain rates. Far from being over qualified for a job, being under qualified is a far bigger issue
More competition simply means that you need to be better. Getting your CV professionally made over is now no longer a luxury, it is something that is absolutely essential if you want to succeed in a very harsh economic climate. Your CV needs to stand out from the others as never before. Get it made over or at least buy and read a book on the subject so that you don’t make the stupid mistakes that will get your application thrown out straight away
I spoke with a recruiter just last week. They are now getting up to 20 times the amount of applications being sent in to them that they used to get. This is an enormous additional workload for them and it means that they have less time to get through the first sift of applications. If you don’t fill in the application form correctly, your application will go straight into the bin. Harsh I know, but very true right now
Getting your CV right is only part of the battle, a strong cover letter is now also essential if you are going to get that dream job. Investing some money in utilising a professional CV writer will pay dividends in the long run. I genuinely mean that I am not at all bothered if you don’t use our services- you owe it to yourself and your family to get that job- at the moment, any job is better than none
Some companies and people respond well to a direct approach as they see that the person making the approach has initiative. Some others, predominantly those in the public sector do not respond to those sort of approaches. Getting your CV ready to hand out to people is a smart thing to do. If you are going to the effort of approaching companies directly, make sure that you have all the tools available to give to the employer straight away
