Teaching ESL As A Retirement Strategy
Also, it is relatively easy to obtain a visa status that allows you to stay in Thailand for up to a year at a time without having to cross an international border to renew your visa.
For these reasons, and many others, the aging population of the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, are voting with their feet, and their bank accounts – moving to places like Thailand, where their fixed incomes go much farther and where job opportunities in some niche areas are exclusively reserved for the foreigner.
A large segment of the foreign population in places like Thailand stretch their retirement funds by teaching ESL – English as a Second Language. ESL is also considered to be a stable, profitable career path for those too young to retire but too old to find much challenging work back home. The main requirement for teaching English in the public schools in Thailand is to be ESL certified.
This requires a 4 week intensive course, which can be taken right in the country in either Ban Phe, or Phuket, at the TEFL International Teacher Training School.
Another overseas venue that is generating huge interest from the retirement/near retirement demographic is teaching ESL online. This, of course, can be done anywhere – as long as you are ESL certified, have a computer, good Internet connections, and a webcam with a decent set of headphones and microphone.
Many retirees have become certified through TEFL International and then gone on to simply stay at home in Thailand and teach Japanese, Korean, and Chinese students online a few hours each day. Thailand has dependable, fast Internet connections everywhere but the far North and deep South.
While it would be impossible to make a decent living teaching ESL online in a First World Country like Britain or the USA; it is completely feasible in a country like Thailand, where living expenses are a third of what they would be anywhere in Europe or North America.
TEFL International is unique among teacher training schools in Thailand in that it will, under certain circumstances, actually guarantee employment to their mature graduates in Thailand. This means you can come to Thailand with an iron-clad promise of future employment as an ESL teacher.
