Checklist For An Electrician

Many of the electricians are honest and capable of doing very good work. But it is very important to explain the electrician about the kind of work that you want him to do for you and then ask some questions regarding that. Like this you will be able to decide whether the electrician will be able to do the work or not. Therefore, before hiring an electrician it is very important to ask him few questions.

Many electricians are field specific means they are able to do certain work efficiently and may not have required knowledge of any other field. Such as some are good in working at commercial field and some do small level work like repairing of damaged home appliances. So while calling an electrician think well and call one who can easily do your work.

One most important thing that an electrician should have is insurance policy and working permission. An electrician may get a health hazard while working, but in this case you will not want to pay for that person and the insurance policy will help both of you. So make sure that you check the insurance policy and workers compensation while hiring an electrician.

You should ask about the service charges beforehand. Most electrical contractors can give you an estimate on phone only. For a small job, an electrician can loose money just by driving out to your home. So he adds up that in service charge and you need to pay accordingly. For big projects, you can ask about the hourly rate of electricians. You should call more then one contractor and get the best rates for the work you need.

You should not purchase the materials that are required for the job yourself. If you think, you can save money in purchasing yourself then you are wrong. It is always better if the electrician will make the purchase because he knows well what he requires and the reasonable price of it.

The electrician may need to cut holes in your wall for doing his work but he will not do its repair and you need to fix the damage yourself. So ask before the job has started how much damage will be caused in the job so that you can plan his charges accordingly.

In case of small jobs an electrician is usually paid when the job is completed. But for bigger projects, the electrician may ask for a down payment before he goes to start the job and rest after the completion of the job. So it is better to clarify it the beginning rather than arguing later.

If the electrician has to bring helpers to get the work done on a larger job then he may ask for more money. Hence, ask before the job starts so that you won’t be surprised when the job is finished.
