What You Should Know About Medical School Interview Questions
If you have succeeded in getting an interview at medical school, you are clearly well on the way to achieving your dream. However, whilst you have clearly sold yourself well on paper, the really hard work is only just beginning. Medical school interview questions are notoriously hard, and as such, a bit of planning is required.
Before anything else, it is important to understand that medical school interview questions are not designed to trap you; far from it in fact. They are designed to give the best candidates the best chance at being successful and, whilst certain elements in your answers will be looked for; there are no definitive right or wrong answers that can be given.
There are certain questions that tend to be used from school to school, and below are a few of the most common ones that candidates could expect to hear. There is also a little advice as to how to construct an answer; but it is important to understand that it is down to an individual to perform.
Why do you want to enter medical school? – This is generally one of the first questions answered, and set to illicit a response that shows interest for medicine. If you are serious, your natural passion should come through. This also gives you an opportunity to show interest for any particular areas you could decide to pursue in the future; another way to impress the panel.
Why do you want to study at our medical school? – One of the most important questions you are likely to be asked; get this wrong at your peril! You should have researched the school well of course; its history, culture and so on. But you should also be able to equate reasons as to why they are your choice.
What are your best qualities for medical school? – Here again, honesty is crucial, but you need to sell yourself well. Spend some time really analyzing your strengths, think why you have decided to go to medical school, and ask other people you know as to what they think your strengths are.
What are your worst qualities? – A killer question in many respects; and failure to prepare here will show. Again, ask people you know what your weaknesses are. However, the trick here is to point out those areas you are lacking in, and explain what you are proactively doing to address them.
These are only a few medical school interview questions likely to appear, and they will change. As with anything, the secret lies in preparation and practice. Keep your answers brief, but to the point; and always be prepared for the follow up questions in response to your answers.
