How To Be An Excellent Online Tutor
This article has been created to help online tutors become excellent in their profession. As the world of online tutoring expands I have been asked a lot recently to provide hints, tips and advice to tutors who want to become an online tutor and as a result I have produced this article.
Firstly, its important to remember that at all times the online tutor, just like any other tutor, has to be the source of confidence, support, expertise and encouragement. They should use their knowledge, expertise and experience to help and support a guide a student through their problems. Apposed to just telling them the answer, the best online tutors will help them understand the problem and let the student realize the answer and solution for themselves. Remember never to patronize or make fun of any idea or suggestion that a student makes, always take a positive from every answer and encourage them to keep going.
There are many different tutoring techniques that an online tutor can use to teach their students. Below is a list of tutoring techniques, tips and advice. These may not appeal to all tutors but there are definitely some great points that all tutors can use to improve their performance.
Find out what your students need to learn. Find out their strengths and weaknesses by asking direct and intuitive questions. Remember to stay positive, polite and never offend your student. By doing thus the online tutor is able to focus on the areas that need improvement instead of wasting time teaching what they already know. Ask them what they want and what they are expecting as a learner.
Get to know a little bit about your students. There are many benefits of this to you as an online tutor. By finding out what they want to achieve and how they best learn new topics and grasp new subjects will give you the opportunity to tailor your tutoring style to the student. You will be able to create a learning style and environment that they feel comfortable in and are suited to.
As an online tutor it is important that you are willing to be flexible with your teaching technique as one style that make suit one student might not work with another. You may need to find new and interesting ways to express a problem or a solution so that they are able to understand it better. Tutoring is ultimately about helping the students not impressing them with what you know.
You need to be the source of confidence and support for your student. The online tutor needs to be positive and upbeat to create a positive and upbeat learning environment where the student feels confident to offer new suggestions without the fear of being judged. Remember to tell your students that failure is the pillar of success and to keep trying and to be tenacious.
An online tutor has much more time to check their students work compared to a school teacher. Make sure that you check the students work very carefully. If you find any errors bring them to the attention of the student. Give them the opportunity to correct their mistake before jumping in to correct them.
Towards the end of each session, the online tutor should review or summarize what you have done in that session. This is a practice that you should always carry out when you are tutoring. It is normal for them to forget certain points that you have taught during the tutoring session and by reviewing what you have taught them, you will be filling them with the points that they have forgotten.
Being an online tutor gives you many more advantages than a traditional face to face technology. It allows you to save your work online or on your computer so that lesson notes can be stored and reviewed as necessary. Also, as an online tutor it makes teaching and learning more fun and entertaining which will definitely improve the results of each lesson.
Make sure you read out where you can become an online tutor and information about online tutoring.
